The City of Inverness Florida, incorporated in 1919 is situated on the East side of Citrus County surrounded by some 50 lakes that make up the Tsala Apopka Lake Chain. Inverness is also conveniently located between Ocala, Tampa, and Orlando, each within about an hours drive or less.

Established as the County Seat, Inverness Florida serves as the center for local government. Located on the historic downtown square of Inverness is the "Old Courthouse" build around 1912 it served as the center for government business until the 1970s.

The historic courthouse now serves as a museum and monument to the area, giving people a glimpse into Citrus County just after the turn of the 20th century. The new courthouse is located just down the street in downtown Inverness Florida.

The city of Inverness offers many local and unique events to the area.

There are many public parks and recreation areas offering baseball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, swimming pools and hiking and biking trails such as the Withlacoochee State Trail as well as public fishing piers.

One of the most notable is Whispering Pine Park, one of the largest recreational facilities in Citrus County. There is also Liberty Park and Cooter Park on the water.

Much of the activities in Inverness Florida are centered around the water.

The Tsala Apopka Lake Chain with Big Lake Henderson and Little Lake Henderson are popular boating and fishing destinations.

These is also air boating, canoeing, kayaking, tubing and scuba diving in the area. There is even an annual speed boat race in Inverness Florida.

Some of the local events include the 4th of July Festival and the now "world-famous" Great American Cooter Festival named after the native Cooter Turtle.

The family friendly Cooter Fest features cooter races, fireworks, music, arts and crafts, great food, and fun for everyone in downtown Inverness Florida.

If you enjoy golfing, Inverness offers up some excellent golf courses at the Inverness Golf and Country Club as well as the Lakeside Golf and Country Club right on the waters edge.
