Dunnellon Florida occupies three counties, Citrus County, Levy County, and primarily Marion County. The region is renowned for its fishing and water sport activities with the Rainbow River, Withlacoochee River and Lake Rousseau.

As part of the "Nature Coast", Dunnellon has several crystal clear, natural springs, one of them, the Rainbow Spring marks the beginning of the Rainbow River.

Considered one of the most pristine and beautiful rivers in Florida, the Rainbow River and the region around it, known as Rainbow Springs, is a popular spot for nature lovers, fishermen, and pleasure boaters.

Native wildlife and vegetation thrives all around this popular waterway often occupied with 'tubers', people floating by on inner tubes. There are many hiking and nature trails as well as kayak and canoe trails through the mangroves and sawgrass.

The Rainbow Spring itself is surrounded by the Rainbow Springs Park, a botanical wonderland with picnic, recreation, and swimming area. From the 1930's to the 1970's the area was actually a theme park with a zoo, glass bottom boat rides, gondola & monorail system and even a submarine ride. The relics of the old zoo are still visible today

The Withlacoochee River, one of only a handful of rivers in North America that flows north, is also a popular waterway in Dunnellon and is fed by the Rainbow River.

Lake Rousseau is another great fishing hole in Dunnellon, Florida. Formed by the Withlacoochee River, as part of the original Cross Florida Barge Canal project, Lake Rousseau is full of cypress trees.

The Withlacoochee River is a great river for fishing. Largemouth bass, pan fish, and brown bullheads are abundant.

This 157-mile stream originates in Green Swamp in Hernando County and flows north to the Gulf at Yankeetown.
The abundant cover grow plenty of bluegill, sunfish, catfish, black crappie and largemouth bass. There is also a dam and lock system at one end on the lake.
